Warren Elementary School
October Newsletter

PTA - The next PTA meeting will be held on Oct. 13th at 7:30. The third grade will be performing. All third grade parents please bring cookies for refreshments.

Music Boosters - All parents should have received a letter in the mail. Please make sure it is returned to the music room ASAP. We would like to thank all the parents who have completed the volunteer forms. We will notify parents who volunteered before the events. Please remember to attend our meeting on October 13th at 6:00 p.m.

Music Boosters Skating Party - All Warren Elementary School students and parents are invited to come to the school skating party on October 29th from 6:30 to 8:30 at Marietta Roller Rink.

Magazine Sales - PTA would like to thank all the parents who volunteered to help with magazine sales. Special thanks goes to Robin Testerman for doing an excellent job as chairperson and Jean Lawrence for being co-chairperson. At this time magazine sales are not finalized but the students have done a wonderful job. Next month we will give a final report on the fund-raiser.

School Fees - There are still a large number of students who have not paid school fees. Remember these must be paid by Oct. 30 in order for report cards to be issued. Fees are as follows:

Kindergarten $10.00

Grades 1, 2, 3 $30.00

Grades 4, 5, 6 $15.00

Grades 7, 8 $10.00

Please make checks payable to Warren Elementary.

Fall Craft Show - The Warren Elementary PTA fall craft show is just around the corner. It will be held from 10:00AM - 4:00PM, Saturday, October 10, in our school gymnasium. Raffle/country store drawings will be held at 3:30PM. Winners need not be present to win. Food court items to be sold are subs, pizza, taco in a bag, baked goods, pop, and lemon shakes. There will be raffle drawings for 3 "retired" beanie babies and a Lee Middleton Doll. There will be over 20 crafters displaying: bears, rag dolls, Halloween and Christmas decorations, floral arrangements (wreaths & swags), birdhouses and much more. Crafters are donating items for the country store. The "kid’s korner" will provide quality children’s hands-on activities while the parents shop. Free admission. If you want to volunteer or have any questions, please call Jan Emge, 896-2944.

From Our School Counselor - My monthly classroom presentations this year will again focus on a specific topic each month. For the month of September the theme was "goals". Students in grades 5-8 selected one goal to put down on paper. In May, we will review the progress they made towards reaching this goal. This month our theme will be cooperation. Other themes include thankfulness (Nov.), friendship (Dec.), respect (Jan.), kindness (Feb.), attitude (Mar.), responsibility (Apr.), and choices (May). In each class we will address the current theme and attempt to focus on the role it plays in helping us to be successful.

Interested 6th grade students will again be recycling aluminum cans and invite everyone to participate in this effort. Bags of empty cans can be brought in any day and left in the grassy area at the front of the school. Last year we collected 384 pounds of cans and earned $129.20 for the purchase of playground equipment. Our goal this year is $150! We are planning to use this years proceeds to purchase a VCR for one classroom and hope to get another donated by the business where we make the purchase. In May, all teachers without a VCR will be included in a drawing to see who will get the two VCRs! Thanks to those who have already brought cans to help us reach our goal!

Mrs. Boley’s Class - At the beginning of the school year Mrs. Boley’s fourth grade students sent a "Travel Log" to someone they knew outside of the Marietta area. As these people receive the "Travel Logs", they are to write a description of their hometown into the log. They are also asked to send a postcard from their city, state, or country to the children here at school. Following this, each "log" is then sent on to someone of their choosing and the above activities are repeated.

The "Travel Logs" aren’t due back to the students until April. We are hoping to learn about many different places and have our "logs" travel the world!!

So far we have heard from: Texas; San Francisco, California; Cincinnati, Ohio; Vero Beach, Florida; Cape Coral, Florida; Little Rock, Arkansas; Brooklyn, New York; Decatur, Illinois; Kentucky; and Belgium. We also have heard that one of our "logs" is on the way to Malta. Presently, our postcards are hanging in our classroom for anyone to see. Please stop by and "see the world"!!!

Fall Book Fair - A Troll Book Fair will be held Oct. 29 - Nov. 5 plus Nov. 6 (parent/teacher conference day). The book fair will also be open on November 6th during Parent-Teacher conferences for anyone who would like to browse and purchase books. This would be an excellent opportunity to purchase books for Christmas. Each classroom will be visiting the book fair during their regular library time. With this book fair, the students will be purchasing and receiving the books and items the day they come to the book fair. The book fair will have books, pencils, erasers, posters, and bookmarks to purchase. Book lists will be sent home with students so that parents can help students choose items to purchase. Proceeds will be used to purchase books for our school library.
